Communion – 6th June 2021

Gathering

We sit at home, in church, in our own space and place at Christ’s invitation.
He has bid us to come in and eat with him,
So we sit in welcomed community,
As part of his global church, spread across every land and all time.
We remember those who have eaten and drunk in remembrance of Christ,
The many millions who have shared in this simple meal of eternal grace,
And join with them in this sacred moment once again.

It was Christ who instituted this meal of remembrance,
as we read the words of St Paul to the church in Corinth:

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you:
the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,
and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said,
‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’
In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying,
‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood;
do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’
For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
(1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

Accepting the forgiveness and mercy that was poured out for all,
We pray before we eat and drink:

Gracious God,
Thank you for the gift of your Son for all,
His life, death and resurrection that showed the way of love.
Thank you for the example of community that was around that table,
For the mixed bag of humanity that shared in so much of life,
And were welcomed in to your journey.
Thank you that all are welcome to be at your table,
To share in the mixed bag of life,
Knowing that you are with us through it all.
Amen.

Sharing

So we eat and drink, in remembrance of the one who died for all.
Pause to eat. Pause to drink.

Sending

We pray:

Loving God,
As your Son went through the pain of death and separation from his family and friends,
He did it for all to know your love and forgiveness.
But his death was not the end and theirs was a joyful reunion
Of resurrected life and a continuing story.
Send us out into your world to be your hands and feet,
The carriers of your Good News,
To find others to share life with.
May we see you in the lives of those around us,
As we seek to show you to others.
Amen.
